Indeed, Plautus’ contemporary legacy was an impressive one; his plays were still being performed in Rome up until the time of Horace (65-8 BC). He was also popular in Renaissance Italy, especially after 1429 when 12 of his plays, presumed lost forever, were unearthed in Germany.

Plautus’ earliest plays, Addictus and Saturio, were written while he was still a hand-miller, travelling from door to door. His comedies became a success and he soon became a full-time dramatist. Plautus chose to rework Menander’s plays instead of just translating them. In Plautus, the old man Euclio is a miser who has discovered hidden gold in his house, but the action of the play turns on getting his daughter married and her receiving the gold for her dowry. In Querolus, the old man Euclio has died, leaving gold buried in his home.
